Jun29 Obama’s LGBT Reception

I thought this was worth sharing:
I actually think Obama is going to make good on his LGBT promises. It’s about time too. It doesn’t matter who you love, in the end you should have the right to be happy. It sure is nice to have a level-headed and open-minded leader in charge.

I don't think Obama has been as supportive as he promised he would be before he was elected on the issue of gay marriage. I could be wrong, but I am sure I remember reading no progress had been made in that area.

Something to remember is that not all political promises are kept, and many political promises are made to get votes.

Hm, are you sure about that Justin? During the campaign he said that he supported civil unions, but not applying the term "marriage" to homosexual unions. He said his perspective was that "marriage" was widely considered to be a religious term/institution/etc and that the government recognized "civil union" portion was the secular, public aspect (because you can be married without being civil united and you can be civilly united without being married). So, he said that he believed the government should provide the same rights via civil union, but that as a religious ceremony (at least in his eyes) the govt shouldn't have a say in "marriage" by forcing a religion to perform/recognize a union that it doesn't support.

It's not really the way that I think about it, but that was definitely his stated belief. I personally think if the govt wants to take the stance that "marriage" is a religious term then it needs to update ALL of the laws and documents to remove the term "marriage" and replace it with "civil union." I'd prefer the govt to be out of the marriage business entirely.

He definitely campaigned on getting equality for LGBT in the military, but he wasn't one of the gung-ho-gay-marriage candidates.

Well he has worked on repealing DADT if I'm not mistaken
  • I hope so, I want a trans-inclusive ENDA.
