Feb03 Atheist Amazing Grace

I discovered this the other day when looking for ocarina tabs(I ordered one the other day and I am quite excited to start playing.). The lyrics are just sung in place of the regular lines of Amazing Grace. I think they are worth memorizing and substituting them in whenever possible. What do you think, is it too much to desecrate such a deep and beloved song?

“Let Go Of Faith”

Let go of ‘faith’
It’s truth we need.
And ‘faith’ steps in the way.

From birth to grave
We must seek truth
Or live as haunted slaves.

If you claim you know
You don’t learn more
There is always more to know

As we live and love
And work for peace
Seeking truth is how we grow.

this also assumes that truth and faith are contradictions when in fact the opposite of faith is unbelief, and the opposite of truth is falsity. So there is nothing contradictory about faith and truth being compatible. Like the old formula, "Faith seeking understanding."

A lack of faith doesn't always constitute a lack of belief. Anyway, it
is just a little song. Not meant to be taken so seriously and analyzed
    as such.

not analyzing the song, but the belief behind it. It clearly assumes that those who have faith cannot have truth. That is simply untrue.

It is in reference to blind, unquestioning faith that refuses to seek
    and accept truth.

that is your back door escape hatch. For those who want to read it as faith in general, I'm sure you're more than happy to oblige.

If someone responded that they love the poem because people who have faith always reject truth, would you side with them and laugh and jeer, or would you stand up and say "now thats not fair. many Christians arent blindly faithful but do seek and obtain truth."?

I wouldn't laugh and jeer at anybody anyway, because that isn't very civilized. Many Christians do accept the Bible as the literal truth though and seek no other answers. Clearly you are an exception as you are well versed in the Bible and in atheist writing as well. Even the atheists have fundamentalists. This close-mindedness isn't a boon to atheists either.

No offense, but from many of your posts, I dont think you are above laughing and jeering at the Theistic/Christian worldview.

I think there is a deeper meaning to the original lyrics that transcends the religious connotations. The symbolic significance is entirely independent of the specifics: at its core, Amazing Grace is a song about desolation, desperation, and redemption.
