Sep16 Carpe Diem, A Motto For Atheists?

Most people will recognize the phrase Carpe Diem. If you are unfamiliar with it, the meaning is “Sieze the Day”. Does that not sound perfect for atheists? I would think that an atheist appreciates the short amount of time we are each allotted much more than religous folks. I know there is no afterlife, no second chance. Many atheists seize the day by actually going and improving their world around them, not just sitting around praying and hoping we will see change. We don’t waste time and money every week giving to the church. What if all that time and money was instead given to community service and charity? Wouldn’t that make the world a better place? As an atheist I recognize tomorrow is not a given, only today is. This in turn makes each day even more valuable to me. This phrase might be an even better description: Carpe diem quam minimum credula postero which means “Seize the day, trusting as little as possible in the future.” If you are still slave to a religion, why not sieze today? Break those chains which bind you in your faith. Need help? Email me, I’ll get back to you. godlessblogger@gmail.com Enjoy the life you have, there is no afterlife and when this is gone that’s it.

  • I agree with Crystal. I think we can trust in the future, so long as it's a future which follows logically what we know in the present. I trust that the sun will come up tomorrow, not because a god is driving it, but because I understand the mechanism behind its motion. I have a reasonable expectation that the future will happen, whether I'm there for it or not.

Now if you mean, "Seize the day, because you may not be around for the future" then I'd agree. I may get hit by a bus or a piece of space debris tonight. Nothing's certain, at least from my own perspective.

Perhaps a better phrase would be "Seize the day. Think as objectively as possible." I don't want to stop trusting, and I don't think that's necessary, as long as one remains skeptical and objective.
