Sep08 Incest is A OK In The Bible… Or Is It?

The story of Lot tells quite a bit about the Bible’s stance on incest. Read this:

Our father is old, and there is no
man
left on

the earth
, to come in unto us after the manner of the whole earth. Come, let us make him drunk with wine, and let us lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father. And they made their father drink wine that night: and

the elder
went in and lay with her father: but he perceived not neither when his daughter lay down, nor when she rose up. And the next day
the elder
said to the younger: Behold I lay last night with my father, let us make him drink wine also to night, and thou shalt lie with him, that we may save seed of our father. They made their father drink wine that night also, and the younger daughter went in, and lay with him: and neither then did he perceive when she lay down, nor when she rose up. So the two daughters of Lot were with child by their father. [
Genesis 19:31-36]

Of course, it was okay because they needed to procreate after fleeing Sodom and Gomorrah. In case you aren’t familiar with the story, here is a video which does a pretty good job of explaining it. (It’s also hilarious too.)

Maybe though, this one section was just a fluke. I mean the all knowing God would have thought about this before hand and tried to prevent it right? Wrong. Want another example? I am happy to oblige.

Howbeit, otherwise also she is truly my sister, the daughter of my father, and not the
daughter
of my mother, and I took her to wife. And after
God
brought me out of my father’s house, I said to her: Thou shalt do me this kindness: In every place, to which we shall come, thou shalt say that I am thy
brother
. [
Genesis 20:12-13]

There is a problem with this though. In fact, incest is CONDEMNED! Look here:

Leviticus 18:6-14

6 ‘None of you shall approach anyone who is near of kin to him, to uncover his nakedness: I am the LORD. 7 The nakedness of your father or the nakedness of your mother you shall not uncover. She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 The nakedness of your father’s wife you shall not uncover; it is your father’s nakedness. 9 The nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father, or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or elsewhere, their nakedness you shall not uncover. 10 The nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, their nakedness you shall not uncover; for theirs is your own nakedness. 11 The nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, begotten by your father—she is your sister—you shall not uncover her nakedness. 12 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is near of kin to your father. 13 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister, for she is near of kin to your mother. 14 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother. You shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt.

It actually goes on even more than that about all the things you cannot do. Of course, a contradiction is pretty much the norm when it comes to religious texts. Then again, this is Old Testament so you can just do what most Christians do and ignore it. Wait, actually ALL the laws ALWAYS apply.

Matthew 5:17-19
17Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

18For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

19Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

I’m so fucking confused. And this is supposed to be the infallible word of God?

  • I suppose the more moral option in your opinion is to let those peoples just die off?

Okay, I'm an atheist who used to be an Evangelical Christian. I think you're making something out of nothing. Nowhere in the Bible is there any indication that incest is condoned. The incident with Lot says nothing to suggest the God of the Bible thought it was okay. Likewise with Abraham and so forth. The reason posts like this irk me is that they're so easy to dismiss by Christians--and rightly so. They can point to such as evidence that we're grasping at straws to find flaws in their religion. There are plenty of real problems with the Bible and its God. We don't have to be making stuff up.

Incest MUST be okay in the Bible and condoned by the Biblical god, at least until Leviticus, because there is no way that 2 people can begin the human race without TONS of incest going on, or you have a huge loophole in the Biblical narrative with these extra people over in the land of Nod for which we have no origins, and if that is the case then if there were a bunch of other humans living elsewhere then all that fuss about Adam and Eve was for nothing and why should the people of Nod be punished with "original sin" they had apparently had been screwing for ages without as much as a thought from Yahweh. Either way, it exposes itself for the fiction that it is.

I don't feel like I am making a mountain from a molehill. While incest is not directly condoned, it is mentioned a few times throughout the Bible. I didn't see a single instance of God directly punishing those who committed it, even though God was readily punishing others who disobeyed other things. It just seems like a blatant contradiction there. If God was really against this, wouldn't He have punished some of these people? Otherwise it's as if He is turning the other cheek. I will admit this isn't the strongest argument we have, but it is an argument. I'm not trying to grasp as straws, just trying to show another point here.
