Sep01 You Have The Right To Be Offended

I would argue that, because you have a right to free speech you also have a right to be offended. Other people may not completely agree with you all the time. In no way do you deserve to be sheltered from anybody else’s thoughts. Well you do in a way, but you can’t stop them from saying that. If you don’t agree with somebody, change the channel, walk away, or stick your fingers in your ears and keep telling yourself Earth is only 10,000 years old. We need to stop giving religions this stupid respect. They do not deserve it at all. I bet if somebody walked up to you and said the Holocaust never happened, you would say he is crazy. You probably would want some substantiation to the claims. We actively challenge people who begin saying crazy shit, except for religion. Doesn’t an extraordinary claim require extraordinary proof ? As soon as the word “faith” is uttered, most people stop. Why? Faith doesn’t deserve to simply be respected. This taboo on religious arguement needs to be abolished. Maybe if we all just talked, some people would be able to see past their blinders. I’m not going to stop just because you are offended by what I have to say. I skip over tv evangelists, it’s not that hard. Yesterday, I had somebody tell me not to say “God Damn It”. They acknowledged I was an atheist but said not to say it. I said fuck you. If that phrase gives me comfort when I’m pissed off, who are you to take it away from me? Once religion becomes acceptable to discuss, we can start to see it regress. If instead we ignore it and let people perpetuate these crazy, bullshit ideas, we will never solve the problem.

What good does it do to be offended? Religion is primarily spread by indoctrination. Given family + friends + trusted authority figures all saying that God is real vs. angry stranger guy yelling that religion is crap which do you think is going to win?

I'm not here to be so right that I have to prove everybody else wrong. If that's your thing I have no issue with it because I too believe in free speech. That said, the angry yelling thing doesn't help what I'm trying to do, which is to convince religious people to do away with magical thinking by being somebody they can relate to and talk to without getting yelled at.

I understand what you mean. My main purpose isn't to go yell at people
and tell them they are wrong. I just want people to get over
themselves enough to actually hold a conversation. As a society, we
should be able to talk about religion in the same way we do with those
who claim to have been abducted by aliens.
